Few Roman poets have driven more Latin students insane than Sextus Propertius. And that’s a damned shame. For his poetic heartbeat, too often lost in long lists of gods, is as strong as the best of the rest. He has Catullus’ fire and Horace’s virtuosity along with Ovid’s wit.
